Respond to one of the topics below, using the story of your choice.
- The use of satire as a main literary element. (How did it work? Effectiveness?)
- The use of suspense as a main literary element. (How did it work? Effectiveness?)
- Discuss the author’s “tone” within specific works and how it is delivered. (Example: author’s, narrator’s, or character’s voice).
- Character development in each story. What did various characters show us about ourselves on a UNIVERSAL level?
- Author’s use of irony in specific texts. Was this an effective tool to use in a given story? Explain.
Introductory Paragraph – the introductory paragraph will provide your specific thesis. Your first sentence must name the novel upon which your essay is based.
Main body paragraphs 2, 3, 4 – these are the best arguments you have to support your thesis. Each paragraph must include a correctly inserted quotation.
Concluding paragraph – this is a conclusion that provides finality and closure to your essay. It must be directly connected to your thesis.

*****DO NOT USE FIRST PERSON IN YOUR ESSAY. IT IS NOT OPINION. IT IS LITERARY ANALYSIS. IT SHOULD BE FACTUAL AND BASED ON VALID INTERPRETATION OF THE TEXT*****
I want you to think about the story using your own brain! If you do consult outside sources, be sure to cite them using MLA format. You may lose points simply because you relied too heavily on outside sources.
