Literature Circles
Task: In this assignment students will be tasked with reading the novel Treasure Island and participating in group discussions that demonstrate their ability to participate in a discussion and their knowledge of the novel.
Directions:
- Read the Novel

Prepare for Discussion
- Establish a topic of discussion prior to discussion
- Identify the characters, conflicts, themes, characteristics, etc
- Identify important quotes
- Create thought-provoking questions for your group
- Participate in a discussion
- Support your opinion with evidence from the text(s)

Assign roles (should rotate for each meeting)
- Facilitator (Keeps everyone on track and on task, ensures discussion questions are agreed on prior to meeting)
- Timer (Limits talk time and limits discussion to the allotted of 10 minutes max)
- Scribe/recorder (records and uploads meeting to Canvas)
- Organizer (Makes sure shared doc stays organized)
- Make meaningful contributions
- Listen and build on others’ ideas
- Be respectful
- Stay on topic (establish the topic(s) prior to the discussion)
- Work with others to reach a conclusion

Products: You will submit your preparation for each meeting to the Canvas dropbox. The scribe/recorder will also submit your video recording of the meeting on Canvas for each meeting.
Grading: You will be graded on a total of 2 standards for a total of 20 summative points.
